Event Details

The Camp Ingawanis Klondike Derby is on Saturday, January 28. This is a new event for our Troop, so we need to build a sled for each team (toboggans from the local sporting goods store aren't allowed :-) Search for "klondike derby sled" at http://images.google.com/ to see various designs. We're planning on building sleds on Saturday morning before our winter event (January 15).  If the weather cooperates, you might be able to practice with the sleds at the winter event.

The idea for the Klondike Derby is taken from North American history in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klondike_Gold_Rush). Pioneers from all over the United States and Canada raced with dog sled teams across the frozen Yukon to make their fortune with gold. Today, scouts live up to the spirit of this adventurous time to rekindle the cold flame of the icy race.

Each team of 4 to 8 scouts will pull a sled and trek through the many cities of the Klondike to compete in a variety of Scouting Skills. Gold Nuggets will be given out to each team from the Mayor of the City as they complete portions of the derby. The Winnebago Council has hosted this event for a number of years, and you'll be competing against teams from other troops to earn gold nuggets. The team with the most gold nuggets wins the derby.

Lunch for the teams will be on the course and will include "Yukon Stew", which is made by each team contributing five small cans of soup. Grizzlies can bring additions for the Yukon Stew if eating with the scouts, or they can visit "Ulcer Gulch" for other options.

If you'd like to participate, please register online at http://klondikederby0128.eventbrite.com/. Please register by Thursday, January 13, so we know how many sleds need to be built. The registration fee is $8 per scout or grizzly.

We'll probably leave from Kennedy HS at around 7:00 am on the 28th and be back that evening.
